Travertine

Travertine is a distinctive natural stone valued for its warm tones, subtle movement and characteristic porous texture. It is a form of limestone created through the deposition of calcium carbonate, typically around mineral springs and other freshwater environments.

Its natural colour palette ranges from soft ivory and cream to beige, warm grey, walnut and richer golden or reddish tones. The small cavities and irregularities within the stone are part of travertine’s natural character and can either be left visible or filled for a smoother surface.

Travertine has been used in architecture for centuries and is suitable for floors, walls, bathrooms, fireplaces, staircases and decorative architectural details. Selected varieties can also be used outdoors, depending on the stone, finish and climate.

The way travertine is cut has a strong effect on its appearance. Vein-cut travertine reveals linear layers and a more architectural character, while cross-cut travertine creates a softer, more cloud-like pattern. Finishes include honed, filled, brushed, tumbled and unfilled surfaces.

Like other limestone-based stones, travertine is sensitive to acids and should be cleaned with products suitable for natural stone.
